An absolute legend, both in his position and as a person. The Rangers are getting a heck of a hire. Hopefully Dolan doesn’t ruin him.
This is not a surprise. He is going home and will get a huge raise too. It's going to take a while for the Rangers to become competitive as they are almost in worse shape today than the CBJ were 6 1/2 years ago.
Best of luck JD
Hard to be too upset. One, the job he did here is remarkable. It's easy to forget with the recent (relative) success how dysfunctional the Jackets were when JD arrived here during the lockout. Aside from the personnel decisions (Jarmo, Zito, Torts, etc.) he brought a sense of calm with him and as a fan, a feeling that an adult was finally in charge, and he knew how the game and league worked. The greatest testament to his work in Columbus is that there isn't a need to fill his role because of the culture he's created within the organization.
The only way I'm upset is if he recruits key members of the front office team to join him in NY while we are in the midst of our most crucial off season. I'm not sure what the contractual obligations are of key personnel like Jarmo and Zito, but I want to assume McConnell and Priest are shrewd enough that they got some sort of informal commitment from JD and NYR to NOT recruit from our front office for a period of two or three seasons in exchange for the right to negotiate with JD while he was still under contract with the CBJ..
It's also too bad the rules have changed so we don't get a draft pick back, like we had to give up to Vancouver when we signed Torts!
