That spring, the Detroit Red Wings began one of the great runs of success in the history of professional sports. They qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first of 25 straight seasons, a stretch that included some of the game's greatest teams, players, and coaches - establishing Detroit as "Hockeytown."

But like all good things, the Red Wings' streak was bound to end at some point. On Tuesday night, it became official.

The Maple Leafs beat the Panthers and the Red Wings lost to the Hurricanes, mathematically eliminating Detroit from playoff contention.

The longest active NHL playoff streak now belongs to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
