He was one of the Columbus Blue Jackets' top offseason priorities.

And now, Charlie Coyle is staying in town for the long-haul.

The Blue Jackets have signed the 34-year-old veteran forward to a six-year contract extension worth $36 million, an average annual value of $6 million.

“Charlie made a tremendous impact on and off the ice for us last season and keeping him in Columbus was a priority,” President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell said Tuesday.

“He is the definition of a true pro, and a durable, reliable, productive right-shot center whose leadership, character and consistency are extremely valuable in this league. We are thrilled that he will continue to be a very important part of the Columbus Blue Jackets for years to come.”

Coyle scored 20 goals and added 38 assists for a total of 58 points this season with the Blue Jackets, his first with the club. It was the third time in his 14-year career he notched 20 goals, the 38 assists tied a career high, and his 58 points was just two shy of a career-high 60 he set two seasons ago while with the Boston Bruins.

Originally a first-round draft pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks, Coyle spent the first seven seasons of his NHL career with the Minnesota Wild before moving to the Bruins for another seven seasons. He was a trade deadline acquisition by the Colorado Avalanche two seasons ago and played 19 games with the Avs at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Coyle was then acquired by the Blue Jackets, along with Miles Wood, in a trade on June 27, 2025.

After playing in every game this season with the Blue Jackets, Coyle has now skated in 411 consecutive games dating back to Oct. 16, 2021. It's the fourth-longest active streak in the NHL and the most games played by a player since the start of the 2021-22 season.

In addition to this NHL career, Coyle has played for the United States at three international tournaments, winning a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2015 IIHF World Championships and also appearing in the 2011 and 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Coyle's new deal runs through the 2031-32 season, which will be his age 40 season.
