CBJ GOALS: |
Jet Greaves made 24 saves and the Columbus Blue Jackets struck twice on the power play to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Wednesday night at Nationwide Arena.
Yegor Chinakhov, Jake Christiansen, Kent Johnson, and Dante Fabbro were the Columbus goal scorers.
Zach Gallant scored for Pittsburgh. The Penguins drop to 0-1-1 on the preseason while the Blue Jackets improve to 2-2-0.
Here are three things that happened from the fourth preseason game in as many days.
Thing 1: Welcome Back, Chinny
After offseason rumblings about a trade request by Chinakhov, the young sniper and the club mended fences at the beginning of training camp, and then Chinakhov did what he does best when things are going well: he scored on his patented snap shot.
Chinakhov's goal at 17:24 (Assists: Zach Werenski, Dante Fabbro) of the first period tied the game 1-1. The Pittsburgh goal by Gallant came at 9:45 of the opening frame (Assist: Ville Koivunen).

Thing 2: Christiansen, Johnson Strike On Power Play
Christiansen is entering his fifth season with the Blue Jackets, and 2025-26 will be his second full season after playing in 68 games last year. In 112 career NHL games, Christiansen has only scored twice, but in Wednesday's game, his marker on the power play went down as the game-winning goal.
The goal came at 4:53 of the second period, giving Columbus a 2-1 lead. Newcomer Charlie Coyle and Chinakhov picked up the assists. It's the second straight day the Jackets converted with the man-advantage, and they are 3-for-13 this preseason on the power play.

Christiansen has 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) in his NHL career, and he'll look to continue rounding out his offensive game.
"I feel like I've continued to work on my offense throughout the whole time," Christiansen said after Wednesday's win. "It's always going to be defense first from me, and I think as my game grows, I can keep tapping into that offense a little bit."
Columbus added their second power play goal at 11:12 of the third period when Johnson got on the board with the 5-on-3 tally to make it 3-1 Jackets. Werenski added his second assist, and Kirill Marchenko picked up the point. Dante Fabbro added the empty net goal.

Thing 3: Another Solid Night In Net
For the first time this preseason, a Columbus netminder started and finished the game.
Greaves made his second appearance and first start of the exhibition season, stopping 24 of 25 shots to pick up the win. Pittsburgh was 0-for-5 on the power play as regulars, including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, sat this one out.
Greaves said postgame he knew he was going to be playing a full 60 minutes. It's been a busy start to preseason for him after stopping 47 of 49 shots in just under five periods of play.
"It's a different situation your first couple games after the summer," Greaves said. "I think the traffic is a big thing. So it's nice to get those reps and see a lot of pucks and be in those situations and feel them out.
"I felt comfortable, but I think things can still be cleaner. That's going to be something I'm looking to improve on, watch the video, and just keep learning and progressing as we continue in the preseason."
Up Next:
The Blue Jackets wrapped up their fourth game in as many nights and will now enjoy a little rest. Their next game is Saturday, Sept. 27, in Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m. as Marc-Andre Fleury makes his return to the Penguins' net.
