How big of an acquisition has Mason Marchment been?
After his third career hat trick to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Tampa Bay Lightning 8-5 during Saturday night's win, Marchment continues to give the Blue Jackets everything they were hoping and then some when they acquired him in a trade with the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 20.
Marchment now has 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 38 games this season between Seattle and Columbus. He had just 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 29 games for Seattle. Since joining the Jackets, he has 11 points in nine games (eight goals, three assists). Even while missing eight games with an upper-body injury, Marchment is second on the team with 1.22 points per game since the trade.
Saturday's hat trick to give him eight goals in nine games set a Blue Jackets franchise record, breaking the previous mark of five goals in nine games, shared by Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Alex Nylander, and Antoine Vermette.

The line of Marchment, Adam Fantilli, and Kirill Marchenko has thrived together, producing eight goals and 2.98 xGF/60 per Natural Stat Trick. Last night, there were two more (5v5), and Marchment capped off the hat trick with the empty net goal to give him a four-point night. He also assisted on Fantilli's first-period goal to give the Jackets a 3-2 lead.
Suffice to say, Marchment and his line are getting along just fine together.
"I think first, just staying positive, and second, we're communicating a lot out there," Marchment said. "Talking about where we like the puck, what kind of plays we want to run. Whatever it is, there's a lot of talk and no hard feelings. Just talking and trying to get better."
The Blue Jackets are 6-2-1 with Marchment in the lineup this season, so it seems like the addition has been a seamless transition for the 30-year-old.
"I'm a big talker," Marchment said. "I'm kind of getting these guys going. They're talking a lot on the bench, which is fun. That's where it starts, just communication, and if you know where the guy's going to be, it's easy.
"We're having fun and just trying to enjoy it."
Columbus' eight goals on Saturday night are a season-high, contrasting starkly with Thursday's 1-0 win over the Dallas Stars, but it's nice to see the team being able to win in a variety of ways.
"Two really good, different teams and you're going to have to win a different kind of way every different night," Marchment said. "The thing that sticks out for me is just the way that we bounced back after they came back and pushed against us in the second there.
"For us to kind of keep our foot on the gas and keep frustrating them is huge."
With the victory, the Blue Jackets are 6-1-0 in their last seven games, their best stretch of the year, and 5-1-0 under Rick Bowness.

It marks the 2nd-time in Blue Jackets history that the club has snapped multiple opponents points streaks of 10+ games in a single campaign (2016-17; MIN-13, MTL-10, PIT-10).#NHLStats
Marchment and the Jackets will try to keep it rolling when they play the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. Columbus finishes their season-long five-game homestand against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.
Then the Jackets have the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues in a road back-to-back on Jan. 30-31, before another back-to-back at the New Jersey Devils, and home against the Blackhawks on Feb. 3-4 before the Olympic Break.
Columbus has accomplished what they've needed to get back in the playoff race and are four points behind the New York Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division.
