CBJ GOALS: |
||||
A storm before the storm.
With a crippling winter weather system approaching the city, the Columbus Blue Jackets had a flurry of their own Saturday night, scoring eight times en route to an 8-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In addition to two huge points to close the gap in the Metropolitan division, the win also featured a pair of milestones: Mason Marchment scored in each period to collect a hat trick for the third time in his career, and Charlie Coyle's second-period goal was the 200th of his NHL career.
It was also the Blue Jackets' sixth win in their last seven games.
Half of Columbus' goals came in the first period, which saw six total goals scored. Cole Sillinger, Adam Fantilli, Dmitri Voronkov, and Marchment each found the back of the net to give the Blue Jackets a 4-2 lead after one.
The Lightning would tie it with a pair of goals just 1:29 apart early in the second to tie the game, but Marchment's second of the night and Coyle's landmark goal put the Blue Jackets up two going into the third period.
Sean Monahan had an empty-netter with just over five minutes left to extend the Columbus lead to 7-4, and after the Lightning got it back to make it a 7-5 game, Marchment's empty-netter with 25 seconds left sealed the deal.
"A lot of great accomplishments tonight," Fantilli said, who ended an 18-game goalless drought.
Jet Greaves made 24 saves on 29 shots against the league's second-highest scoring offense.
Here's how the Blue Jackets got to within four points of third place in the Metro division, while also putting Tampa Bay's 15-game point streak to an end:
1st Period:
(5:47 — CBJ Goal): The Blue Jackets get the first of a quick burst of goals from both sides. Charlie Coyle takes the puck away from the Bolts in the neutral zone and pushes it ahead to Sillinger, who skates into the zone with Mathieu Olivier. Cole keeps it, skates into the circle, and fires a rocket past Bolts goalie Jonas Johansson to give Columbus a 1-0 lead.

(7:48 — TB Goal): Oof, oof, oof. Greaves tries to pass the puck and instead throws it off the skate of Isac Lundestrom. It bounces back, and Greaves can't get to it before it crosses the line to tie the game at 1-1. Jake Guentzel gets the credit for it.

(8:37 — CBJ Goal): Another takeaway in the neutral zone leads to another Columbus goal. This time, it's Erik Gudbranson who takes a Tampa pass, then moves into the Bolts zone with the puck. Gudbranson gets the puck over to Marchment, who does a quick deke to open up a shot path. He gets a look, fires, and makes it 2-1 Blue Jackets.
Two goals for each time in the first ten minutes of the game, including this one from Mason Marchment. His *sixth* goal in nine #CBJ games!pic.twitter.com/fvxqwP7tUb

(10:01 — TB Goal): Raddysh scores on the power play to make it a 2-2 game. He takes a pass from Nikita Kucherov and fires from the circle. Kucherov gets his 50th assist of the season on the play.

(18:33 — CBJ Goal): No one is happier than Fantilli on this one, who breaks an 18-game drought without a goal to regain a lead for the Blue Jackets. There's a scramble in front of the net, and the puck ends up on the stick of Fantilli, who roofs a wrister to make it 3-2 Columbus.

(19:47 — CBJ Goal): The final of six total goals in the period comes with just 13 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Danton Heinen flips the puck ahead, and Voronkov uses his frame to get a hold of the puck as it enters the zone. He creates a little distance between himself and the Bolts' defense, shoots, and finds the back of the net for his 17th goal of the season.
Still playin' a little catch-up on the goals from the first period. Here's the final of four scores in the opening 20 minutes for the #CBJ; this one from Dmitri Voronkov to make it a 4-2 game. Tampa has since tied it; 4-4.pic.twitter.com/QymZMJOlKp

2nd Period:
(3:29 — TB Goal): Tampa Bay cuts the lead in half on a backhand shot from Kucherov. He enters the zone alongside Brandon Hagel, who trips as he gives Kucherov a centering pass. No problem for Kucherov, though, who beats Greaves to cut the Columbus lead to 4-3.

(4:58 — TB Goal): Just 1:29 after they get to within one, the Bolts knot it up. They jump up the ice and create a 2-on-1 break, with Kucherov getting a beautiful pass over to Anthony Cirelli, who buries it to tie the game at 4-4.

(9:05 — CBJ Goal): Good work from Zach Werenski leads to Marchment's second goal of the night. Werenski enters the zone and skates around for a minute, getting the Tampa defense out of sorts. As he draws attention, Marchment skates into the zone after trailing in the play. Werenski finds him, Marchment skates to the face-off dot and shoots, beating Johansson to again put Columbus up, this time 5-4.

(18:57 — CBJ Goal): A big power play goal from Coyle for two reasons — it puts the Blue Jackets up 6-4, and it's the 200th of Coyle's NHL career. Fantilli wins a face-off in the Tampa zone, the puck squeaks back to Werenski, and he gets it back to Fantilli, who is now in the slot and has plenty of space. Rather than shoot, Fantilli sees Coyle near the net and gets a pass his way. A couple of quick moves from Coyle before he slips it by Johansson to give Columbus a 6-4 lead late in the second.
There it is! Number Two Hundred for Charlie Coyle, in his 1,001st career game!

3rd Period:
(14:55 — CBJ Goal): After the Bolts ping one off the goal post, Monahan collects a rebound and flips it down the ice, just finding the inside of the empty net to make it 7-4 Blue Jackets.

(18:54 — TB Goal): A late snipe from Guentzel brings the Lightning within two. With the net empty, he takes a feed from Kucherov and fires from the circle, beating Greaves' glove-side to bring Tampa to within two, at 7-5.
"Third point tonight for Jake Guentzel! Same for Kucherov!"
