A tough night for the Jackets.

Game Recap

After Gus Nyquist went to the penalty box for tripping, Arizona opened the scoring on a power-play goal by Shayne Gostisbehere, who found the net on a wrist shot from the right circle, beating Daniil Tarasov to the far side with 10:36 left in the period.

The Coyotes doubled their lead when Zack Kassian finished a backhand wrap-around with 4:08 remaining in the period.

The Jackets had an opportunity to cut their deficit in half on the power play but were unable to convert. Arizona took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission despite the Jackets having a 1.07-0.23 advantage in 5v5 expected goals, according to naturalstattrick.com.

The second period was not any kinder to Columbus, as Gostisbehere scored his second of the night when he tipped in a back-door feed from Clayton Keller off a face-off play with 12:18 in the middle frame.

The Jackets went to the power play with 9:44 remaining with a chance to cut into their deficit but were unable to register a shot on goal throughout the two minutes.

Arizona made Columbus pay, as it scored on its next power play when Dylan Guenther wristed a shot past Tarasov with 4:38 to play.

That was all for Tarasov, who stopped eight of 12 shots before giving up the net to Elvis Merzlikins.

Arizona took a 4-0 lead into the final period.

The Coyotes extended their lead to five 2:10 into the final period when Jack McBain's wrist shot from the right circle dinged off the far post and in.

Columbus ended the shutout with 13:15 remaining in the period when Johnny Gaudreau scored his fifth goal of the year, beating Arizona goaltender Connor Ingram off his own rebound to the left of the blue paint.

With 4:55 left in regulation, Arizona's Barrett Hayton interfered with Merzlikins, and the two teams had a rather intense disagreement resulting in two more penalties for each team.

Kent Johnson scored his third goal in as many games with 2:36 remaining on a wrist shot from the left circle.

Arizona's Lawson Crouse scored an empty net goal with 20 seconds left to give Arizona a 6-2 lead.

Andrew Peeke scored just 11 seconds later on a wrist shot from the point to make it a 6-3 Arizona lead.

That would be the final score as the Jackets fell to 3-5-0 on the season.
