Three straight losses.

Despite two goals from the first line of Johnny Gaudreau-Boone Jenner-Gus Nyquist and a perfect four-for-four night on the penalty kill, the Blue Jackets fell to the Golden Knights 3-2 in a shootout on Monday at Nationwide Arena.

1st period

Vegas opened the scoring nearly 16 minutes unto the period when William Karlsson's shot from the slot was stopped by Daniil Tarasov but the rebound was put back towards the net by Liam Foudy and the puck deflected in off of Jake Christiansen.

The Golden Knights doubled their lead just 56 seconds later when a Kent Johnson giveaway led to William Carrier's wrist shot from the high slot that beat Tarasov to the glove side through a screen.

Vegas went to the locker room up 2-1 with a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.

2nd period

With 6:10 left in the period, The Jackets cut the Vegas lead in half when Gaudreau finished a one-timer from the right circle from Nyquist that finished a sequence of nearly 90 seconds in the offensive zone.

Around two minutes later, Vegas had a chance to double its lead when Jake Leschyshyn was denied on a breakaway by Tarasov.

With a minute remaining in the period, the Golden Knights went on a two-on-one short-handed rush that resulted in Brayden McNabb's back-hand shot that beat Tarasov but was cleared by Marcus Bjork, saving a goal.

Jack Eichel had a breakaway just 37 seconds later but couldn't beat Tarasov after drawing a slashing penalty to Yegor Chinakov.

The Golden Knights entered the final period of regulation up 2-1.

Third Period

Just over five minutes into the third period, Jack Roslovic had a golden chance to tie the game, but he missed a wide-open net from the right doorstep.

Nyquist had a chance to tie the game at the halfway point of the period, but his chip shot was denied by Thompson.

The Jackets finally tied the game with 7:19 in regulation after Gaudreau set up Nyquist with a pass from the right circle to the left doorstep that was stopped by Thompson but Jenner was at the right doorstep to put the puck home.

The Jackets' penalty-killing unit needed to come up big as Chinakov took a penalty with 3:04 left.

Three periods weren't enough to decide a winner as the teams headed to overtime tied at two.

Overtime/Shootout

Eichel nearly won the game with 3:04 left in OT when he hit the post and Nyquist was denied by Thompson 32 seconds later. The teams were tied at two after 65 minutes so they headed to a shootout, where Vegas won in the seventh round after Paul Cotter beat Tarasov.
