Dmitri Voronkov Scores 10th Goal Of The Season But Oilers Use Three-Goal Third-Period To Beat Blue Jackets 4-1, Win 14th Straight

Despite outplaying their opponent through the first two periods, another poor third-period performance doomed the Blue Jackets in a 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Tuesday.

1st Period

Warren Foegele opened the scoring on the power play at 7:30 after pouncing on a loose puck thrown into the middle by Evander Kane. 

Dmitri Voronkov tied the game with his 10th goal of the season at 15:25 after finishing a sweet give-and-go sequence with Kent Johnson following a Sam Gagner giveaway. 

The teams were tied at one after one with Columbus outshooting Edmonton 13-8.

2nd Period

Neither team scored in the second period, but the Oilers did have a four-on-three power-play goal by Connor McDavid that was nullified by a successful offsides challenge by the Blue Jackets. 

Entering the third period, the Blue Jackets were outshooting the Oilers 23-13 and led the expected goals battle 2.61-1.16, per naturalstattrick.com.

3rd Period

Kane put the Oilers ahead at 4:53 when he potted home a rebound from the left doorstep after Andrew Peeke left him open. 

McDavid eventually got his goal at 5:48 with a shot from the slot that Elvis Merzlikins had no chance to save after Erik Gudbranson shoved Zach Hyman into him.

Dylan Holloway made it 4-1 Oilers at 15:36 from the right circle after Merzlikins surrendered a juicy rebound. 

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fall to 14-23-9.

Injury Update

  • Zach Werenski was placed on IR with an ankle injury suffered on Dec. 27 and is out 4-6 weeks.
  • Patrik Laine is expected to miss six weeks with a clavicle fracture suffered on Dec. 14 and is on IR retroactive to Dec. 14.
