CBJ GOALS: |
||||
That one stings.
The Blue Jackets coughed up leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the third period, allowing the tying goal in the final minute en route to a 5-4 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.
Ivan Provorov got the scoring started for Columbus with a first period goal. Edmonton would answer with 2:32 left on the first of two on the night from Jake Walman.
In one of their better periods of hockey on the young season, the Blue Jackets would regain the lead on a Sean Monahan goal in the opening minutes of the second period and extend their lead to 3-1 in the closing minutes of the frame on a strike from Boone Jenner.
Connor McDavid cut the lead in half with a goal in the first minute of the third before Adam Fantilli would again put the Blue Jackets up two with his third goal of the season at the 4:19 mark of the frame.
The game would remain 4-2 in favor of Columbus until McDavid would strike again at 13:39 to make it a one-goal contest.
With the Oilers ready to pull goaltender Stuart Skinner for an extra attacker, former Blue Jacket Jack Roslovic took a high-sticking penalty with 2:18 left to put Columbus on the power play. But playing not to lose would come back to bite the Blue Jackets, who coughed the puck up in their own zone in a sequence that led to Walman's second goal of the night, this time tying the game with just under one minute left and sending it into overtime.
In the extra frame, the Blue Jackets were caught in a line change that allowed Roslovic to skate in on a breakaway for the game-winning goal. It was the fifth goal allowed by goaltender Jet Greaves, who finished with just 19 saves on 24 Oilers' shots.
"Tough bounces, but also it's on us," said Fantilli.
"We made some mistakes, certainly," said head coach Dean Evason. "But we'll take some good stuff from this game."
Here's how the Blue Jackets lost a fourth straight game:
1st Period:
(11:42 — CBJ Goal): The Blue Jackets go up 1-0 on Provorov's third goal of the season. He shoots through traffic from the point and finds the back of the net just three seconds after the end of a Columbus power play opportunity.

(17:28 — EDM Goal): Walman's floater from distance ties the game at 1-1. The Blue Jackets took a brief look at this one to see if they wanted to challenge that Jack Roslovic tipped it in with a high stick, but opted against it.

2nd Period:
(1:39 — CBJ Goal): Monahan enters the zone with Kent Johnson and Denton Mateychuk. He gets it to Johnson, whose shot goes off Skinner's pads and kicks right back to Monahan. The rebound is put home with ease and puts the Blue Jackets up 2-1.

(18:02 — CBJ Goal): The Blue Jackets go up 3-1 on a Jenner tip-in. Zach Werenski makes a great pass from the point over to Fabbro near the face-off dot. He skates in and throws it in front of the net, where Jenner is there for the tip.

3rd Period / Overtime:

(4:18 — CBJ Goal): The two-goal lead is restored on a huge goal by Fantilli. He starts by forcing the Oilers into a turnover. Marchenko then collects the puck and skates into the slot before dishing it back to Fantilli, who blasts one from near the face-off dot and puts Columbus up 4-2.
