CBJ GOALS:
Marchment (PP) (1st, 4:07)
Marchment (2) (PP) (1st, 19:36)
Marchenko (PP) (3rd, 14:16)

A critical two points heading into the holiday break.

Mason Marchment scored twice as part of three Columbus power play goals for the game and Jet Greaves made 23 saves on 24 shots as the Blue Jackets downed the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 on Monday night.

Both of Marchment's goals came on first-period power-play strikes: he gave the Blue Jackets a lead at the 4:07 mark, then put Columbus up 2-0 in the closing seconds of the frame.

Greaves made 11 saves in the first 20 minutes, Los Angeles' most active period of the night. Included in that were two unsuccessful power plays for the Kings, who ended the night 0-for-5 on the man-advantage.

The Kings cut the lead to one late in the second period when a wrist shot from Andrei Kuzmenko got through traffic to beat Greaves, making it a 2-1 game heading into the third.

Columbus would regain their two-goal lead with just over five minutes left in regulation on another power play goal, this time off the stick of Kirill Marchenko.

The Blue Jackets finished the night 3-for-7 on the power play.

Here's how the Blue Jackets got back to .500 just in time for Christmas:

1st Period:

(4:07 — CBJ Goal): Good puck work from Marchment to give the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead. While on the power play, he skates through a pair of Los Angeles defenders from the point, works his way into the slot and gets a quick wrister that beats Anton Forsberg for the game's first goal.

(19:36 — CBJ Goal): Another power-play goal from Marchment, this one making it 2-0 Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets win a faceoff in the Kings zone and Damon Severson rips one from the point. It's deflected off Marchment's stick and in, with Severson getting his second primary assist of the period.

(18:41 — LA Goal): The Kings only goal of the game comes in the closing minutes of the second off the stick of Kuzmenko. His shot from distance gets through traffic and off the back of defenseman Dante Fabbro, cutting Columbus' lead to 2-1 and bringing Los Angeles as close as they'd get in the game.

(14:16 — CBJ Goal): For the third time of the night, the Blue Jackets get a power play goal. After Columbus gets ahold of the puck to start the man-advantage, they wind the puck around the boards a couple of times before it ends up on the stick of Denton Mateychuk. He gets a crisp pass over to Marchenko, who then skates into the circle and fires one past Forsberg to put the icing on Columbus' victory.

Stat Chat:

  • With a goal in his debut Saturday night and two more in this game, Marchment became the first player in franchise history to score three goals in his first two games. Severson had the primary assist on all three goals.

  • With his power play goal in the third, make it goals in five of seven career games against the Kings for Marchenko. It was also Columbus' 7th power play goal in their last seven games (and 20 total attempts) against Los Angeles.

  • Without Zach Werenski in the lineup (day-to-day with a lower-body injury), the Blue Jackets had one of their best defensive performances of the season, including limiting the Kings to just eight high-danger chances in the game and only two after the first period.

Up Next:

The Blue Jackets go into the holiday break at 15-15-6, with a chance to get above .500 in their next game. That's Sunday at 5:00 p.m. when they take on the New York Islanders at Nationwide Arena.
