CBJ GOALS:
Mathieu Olivier (2nd, 0:44)
Zach Werenski (2nd, 2:28)
Mason Marchment (3rd, 4:38)

Mathieu Olivier, Zach Werenski, and Mason Marchment each scored and Jet Greaves stopped 24 of 26 shots as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Tuesday night in a win that bolstered the Blue Jackets into second place in the Metro division.

The win, combined with a Pittsburgh Penguins loss to the Colorado Avalanche, put the Blue Jackets into second place, one point (87) ahead of the Penguins (86). Each team has 11 games left in the regular season.

A win looked in doubt during the first opening twenty minutes, as the Blue Jackets were able to get just three shots on goal and had only eight shot attempts in the period. Philadelphia's Sean Couturier scored the only goal of the period. The Flyers had several other opportunities to score, but Greaves stopped the other nine shots he faced in the first to keep it close.

The Blue Jackets would quickly even the game up in the second period, with Olivier's 15th goal of the season coming in the first minute.

Less than two minutes later, the Blue Jackets took a lead they would not relinquish when Werenski ended an 11-game goalless drought with his 21st of the season.

Mason Marchment added a goal early in the third to make it a 3-1 Blue Jackets lead. The Flyers would get one back with the net empty with just over two minutes left, but Greaves again would come up big in the closing seconds to preserve a Columbus victory.

With the win, the Blue Jackets move to 19-3-4 under head coach Rick Bowness, who took over in January for Dean Evason. The 19th win matches Evason's 45-game total (19-19-7).

Here's how the Blue Jackets boosted their playoff odds in a big way with a road win:

1st Period:

(17:07— PHI Goal): The Flyers win a battle along the boards for the puck and squeeze the puck out to Rasmus Ristolainen, who fires a shot from the point. Greaves make the original save but can't control the rebound. Luke Glendening then pushes the puck through the crease, and that's where Couturier is waiting to put it home and put Philadelphia up 1-0.

(0:44 — CBJ Goal): The Blue Jackets tie the game via some nice puck movement that allows them to enter the zone 4-on-2. Werenski draws both defenders into the slot and as soon as they both close in on him, he gets it over to Olivier, who then fires it from the circle and past Vladar to even the game at 1-1.

(2:28 — CBJ Goal): A total team effort puts the Blue Jackets ahead. Kirill Marchenko forces a Flyers turnover in their own zone. Some quick passes gets the puck to the stick of Damon Severson, who makes a quick touch pass to Werenski. He's all alone in the slot and skates in just briefly before firing a wrister into the net to make it 2-1 Columbus.

(4:38 — CBJ Goal): Another good play by Marchenko helps to set up a Marchment goal that extends Columbus' lead to 3-1. He does a great job of battling for the puck in the corner through a pair of Flyers, then flips the puck to the faceoff dot. That's where Marchment is waiting and fires one past Vladar. The officials don't originally rule it a goal, but as play continues, the refs stop play to make the ruling of a good goal.

(17:56 — PHI Goal): With the net empty, the Flyers cut the lead to 3-2. Drysdale fires from a distance and it through all kinds of traffic and then past Greaves to make it a one-goal game heading into the final two minutes. It's as close as the Flyers would get.

Stat Chat:

  • This was the 25th multi-point game for Werenski this season, tying him with Artemi Panarin for the most in a single season in franchise history. That was in the 2018-19 season, when Panarin set a franchise record with 87 points. Werenski, now at 77 points for the season, needs 11 points in the final 11 games of the season to break that record.

  • Marchenko's first assist was the 100th of his career and comes just ten days after the 100th goal of his career. The apple gave Marchenko 200 points through the first 281 games of his NHL career.

  • Columbus' 19 shots on goal was there fewest of the season. Their only other game with 20 or less came in a 4-0 shutout win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 4.

Up Next:

The third and final game of a critical road trip comes Thursday night when the Blue Jackets go north of the border to face the Montreal Canadiens. Puck-drop is 7:00 p.m.
