Everyone could see this one coming

It didn't matter what the scoreline was going to be. Considering the cast of characters involved in this season, it all was a given.

Despite all of the fighting, there was hockey that was played. When it wasn't stopped for pushing and shoving, the hockey was at a high level.

  1 2 3 OT F
Blue Jackets 0 1 1 0 2
Penguins 0 0 2 1 3

The first period saw multiple opportunities for both sides but what really highlighted the period was a beatdown from Ryan Reaves that was levied on Lukas Sedlak. It set the tone for what would later happen.

The second period was more of the same but there was a goal somewhere in there. It came courtesy of Pierre-Luc Dubois who beat Matt Murray with a sharp shot. What anyone will remember from this game though is the end of the second period when Boone Jenner got a game misconduct for cross-checking. Seth Jones, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Nick Foligno all would get penalties from the run in.

The third period started with a 4v4 before a three-minute power play and on that powerplay, Patric Hornqvist scored off of a Phil Kessel shot pass. The third period would have more of the same though as pushing and shoving took place after almost every whistle.

The Penguins would be given a power play after a faceoff violation from Artemi Panarin and it didn't take long for Pittsburgh to score. Evgeni Malkin hit the puck out of the air and put them ahead by one.

Not even a minute afterward the Blue Jackets would go on the power play and Panarin would redeem himself and tie the score at two.

The game would go to overtime where naturally it was a back and forth affair. There would be nothing doing though in the extra frame and they would go to the shootout.

Malkin was the first shooter in the shootout and scored. Cam Atkinson was the first shooter for the Blue Jackets and he would also score. The shootout would go to the fourth round where Kris Letang would score against Bobrovsky for the winning score.

Injury Update

Zach Werenski is still listed as day-to-day with a "body" injury. Ryan Murray has been skating since early December but has no timetable for his return.
