The Blue Jackets found themselves trailing early and could never fully recover in a 4-2 loss at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

BLUE JACKETS 1 1 0 2
CAPITALS 2 2 0 4

The first period saw the Blue Jackets outshoot the Capitals 9-6. John Carlson scored early for the Caps before Pierre-Luc Dubois capitalized on a bizarre bounce.

But it was all for not when the Jackets allowed a last second goal - the second last minute goal to burn the club against the Capitals this week.

The second period started out well, with the Blue Jackets scoring at the :27 mark of the period on a Seth Jones slap shot that was redirected by Artemi Panarin.

It didn't last long. Jay Beagle buried a rebound at the 4:38 mark, and Lars Eller added (you guessed it) a power play goal to extend the Capitals' lead to 4-2.

Despite out-shooting the Capitals 37-16, the Blue Jackets failed to add to to their two-goal total.

The loss pushes the Blue Jackets out of a playoff position.

Injury Update

No news on Sonny Milano, who has been skating on his own with an injured oblique. Ryan Murray has been skating with the club in recent days, but still no timetable on his return. Late in the second period, Zach Werenski took an errant T.J. Oshie skate to the groin, and was expected to be out for the remainder of the game, though he returned in the third period.

Next Up

Quick turnaround for the slumping Blue Jackets, who return home to face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at Nationwide Arena.
