Joonas Korpisalo Stops 37 Shots As Blue Jackets Beat Jets 3-1

A huge win at Nationwide.

Joonas Korpisalo made 37 saves, Patrik Laine scored against his former team and Kent Johnson was the third-period hero as the Blue Jackets beat the Jets 3-1 at Nationwide Arena on Thursday.

1st Period

The Jets had the game's first big chance at 14:52 when Josh Morrissey's one-timer from the right circle was denied by Korpisalo.

Cole Sillinger had the Jackets' best chance of the period at 11:27, firing a wrist shot from the left circle that was stopped by David Rittich.

Winnipeg opened the scoring on the power play at 19:58 when Kyle Connor's wrist shot from the right circle beat Korpisalo.

The teams headed to the first intermission with the Jets leading 1-0 with a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.

2nd Period

Laine scored his third goal against the Jets this season on the power play at 10:00 with a wrist shot from the left circle.

The Jets had a chance to re-take the lead with a five-on-three power play but Korpisalo made several key saves from the 13:49 mark to the 14:14 mark.

After both penalties expired, Erik Gudbranson exited the box and went on a breakaway where he was stopped by Rittich at 15:48.

With the Blue Jackets on the power play, Pierre-Luc Dubois had a breakaway of his own at 17:20 but Korpisalo made the save. 

The teams were tied at one heading into the third period with Winnipeg leading 24-16 in shots on goal.

3rd Period

The Jets had another five-on-three opportunity but Connor missed three shots from the 3:18 to 3:35 marks and Korpisalo denied Morrissey at 3:44 to keep the game tied.

Johnson gave the Blue Jackets the lead with a turn-around wrist shot from the right circle that snuck through Rittich at 9:40.

Nikolaj Ehlers nearly tied the game with two shots at 15:32 and 15:45 but Korpisalo stopped them both.

Mathieu Olivier nearly doubled the Jackets' lead at 17:23 with a shot from the low slot but Rittich made the save.

The Jets pulled their goalie with 2:00 left but couldn't score and Boone Jenner iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:57.

The Jackets won 3-1 and improved to 17-34-4.
