Boone Jenner Scores Team-leading 17th Goal but Blue Jackets Lose 3-2 in OT to Coyotes

The point streak lives on.

Boone Jenner and Patrik Laine both scored but the Blue Jackets lost 3-2 in overtime to the Coyotes at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday.

1st Period

Arizona opened the scoring at 14:14 when Troy Stecher's slap shot from the top of the right circle deflected off the stick of Travis Boyd and past Elvis Merzlikins.

The Coyotes doubled their lead at 16:28 after Jack Rolsovic turned the puck over in the offensive zone, leading to a Clayton Keller shot from the left circle that deflected off the backboards to Nick Schmaltz, who fired a slap shot past Merzlikins.

Tim Berni nearly got the Jackets on the board at 17:45 when he hit the post with a wrist shot.

The Coyotes led 2-0 after the first period with a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.

2nd Period

After several high-danger chances, Jenner cut the Jackets' deficit in half at 13:23 when he deflected a Nick Blankenburg shot from the right circle. 

Arizona nearly doubled its lead at 16:21 when Patrik Nemeth had a chance from the goalmouth but he lifted his backhand shot over the net.

Keller nearly scored from the right doorstep at 17:56 but Merzlikins made the save.

The Coyotes led 2-1 after 40 minutes while trailing 19-14 in shots on goal.

3rd Period

Cole Sillinger had a good chance with a wrist shot from the high slot at 2:23 but it was stopped by Connor Ingram.

Nick Bjugstad hit the post at 4:18 with a slap shot from the right circle with a chance to give Arizona a two-goal lead.

Emil Bemstrom won a puck battle in the offensive zone and was all alone in front of the net but was denied by Ingram at 8:39.

Laine tied the game on the power-play at 15:07 with a one-timer from the left circle.

Bemstrom had his second breakaway of the period at 19:34 but Ingram made the save.

The teams were tied at two after regulation with the Blue Jackets leading 35-23 in shots on goal.

Overtime

Barrett Hayton won it in overtime with a wrist shot from the right circle on a wide-open net.

With the loss, Columbus falls to 18-34-5.

Johnny Gaudreau missed his second-consecutive game with an upper-body injury he suffered in Thursday's win over the Jets.
