Bullet dodged.

The Columbus Blue Jackets held off a late charge from the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, picking up a 5-4 win in front of a sold-out Nationwide Arena crowd.

Mathieu Olivier scored twice for the Blue Jackets, including the game's only goal in the opening period.

Charlie Coyle doubled the lead for Columbus early in the second before the Oilers would tie it at 2-2 with two goals in a span of 100 seconds in the middle of the frame.

Coyle, who served as an alternate captain for the game, finished with three points on the evening for the second time in Columbus' last three home games.

The tie would be short-lived as Denton Mateychuk put Columbus in front 3-2 with his fourth goal of the season, tied with Zach Werenski for the most on the team by a defenseman.

Adam Fantilli would make it 4-2 Blue Jackets before the end of the period with a goal for the third straight game.

Kirill Marchenko had an assist on Fantilli's goal to make it ten straight games with at least a point, extending his career-best streak and maintaining the longest current streak in the league.

Olivier's second of the night made it 5-2 at the 7:30 mark of the third period, but Columbus' three-goal lead would last only 27 seconds before Edmonton made it 5-3.

Less than four minutes later, Leon Draisaitl would make it a 5-4 game with his second goal of the night.

But, bucking the trend from recent games, the Blue Jackets would hang on to the lead this time, with several stops from goaltender Jet Greaves in the closing minutes to secure Columbus' second straight victory.

Greaves finished with 25 saves on 29 shots.

Here's how the Blue Jackets moved to 9-7-1 on the season:

1st Period:

(15:36 — CBJ Goal): Olivier gets the scoring party started for the night. He redirects Coyle's shot and it bounces through the five-hole of Pickard to put the Blue Jackets in front 1-0.

2nd Period:

(0:44 — CBJ Goal): Columbus doubles up on their lead in the opening minute of the middle frame, this time with Coyle getting the goal from an Olivier (and Werenski) assist.

(8:09 — EDM Goal): Edmonton gets on the board for the first time to cut the Columbus lead to 2-1. It's the second career NHL goal from Savoie and comes off a tip-in of an Evan Bouchard shot.

(9:49 — EDM Goal): ...and just like that, it's a 2-2 game. Draisaitl rings one off the post and in to give the Oilers their second goal in less than two minutes and tie it up.

(10:19 — CBJ Goal): A big-time response from the Blue Jackets just 30 seconds later. Sean Monahan's shot goes wide, but the deflection off the glass goes right to Mateychuk, who slaps it home to put Columbus back in front, this time 3-2.

(18:20 — CBJ Goal): The Blue Jackets go up 4-2 late in the frame when Fantilli reaches around Pickard to keep his hot streak going.

3rd Period:

(7:30 — CBJ Goal): Olivier's second of the night makes it 5-2 Blue Jackets. Coyle again gets the primary assist, as he waits behind the net with the puck until just the right moment and finds Olivier in the slot for the goal.

(7:57 — EDM Goal): Less than 30 seconds later, the Oilers respond. Vasily Podkolzin trims the Columbus lead to 5-3.

(11:27 — EDM Goal): The Oilers make it a one-goal game on Draisaitl's second of the night, but it's as close as they would get.
