Boone Jenner's Gordie Howe hat trick and go-ahead goal with 1:34 left in the third period lifted the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Calgary Flames 5-3 on Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena in head coach Rick Bowness' coaching debut.

Columbus has won two straight.

Charlie Coyle and Zach Werenski both had three-point nights. Coyle had two goals and an assist, while Werenski had a goal and two assists. Dante Fabbro started the scoring. Jet Greaves made 29 saves.

Morgan Frost, Rasmus Andersson, and Mikael Backlund scored for Calgary. Dustin Wolf stopped 38 shots.

The Blue Jackets were without two blue line regulars as Denton Mateychuk (upper body, day-to-day) and Damon Severson (illness, day-to-day) missed Tuesday's game. Dysin Mayo was back with the team on emergency recall and in the lineup.

Columbus had the early energy as they were staked out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals by Fabbro and Coyle.

The second period was chippier, with a fight between Jenner and Andersson, with the score still 2-0. After a penalty-free first period, there were three penalties each between the two teams in the middle frame. Calgary evened things up with two second-period goals of their own with power-play goals by Frost and Andersson.

Werenski extended his home point streak to 15 games with a first-period assist. His third-period go-ahead goal was his 17th goal of the season off a wrist shot to beat Wolf.

Ivan Provorov turned 29 on Tuesday. He left the game in the third period when the puck deflected off his stick, into his face, but he would return.

Jenner's eventual game-winning goal at 18:26 of the third period put Columbus on top 4-3. Jenner's assist on Coyle's empty-net goal at 19:57 gave him the Gordie Howe hat trick.

"We asked them to compete," Bowness said. "And we did. We competed. We played very well. In the first 40 minutes, we weren't giving up anything 5-on-5. Clearly, the penalty kill is the one that set us back. We'll work on that. We can fix that."

Here's how the Blue Jackets won in Bowness' head coaching debut:

1st Period:

(3:57 — CBJ Goal): Fabbro's third goal of the season in the early going of the first period put the Jackets ahead 1-0. Zach Werenski added to his 15-game home point streak with his 32nd assist, and Charlie Coyle (20) for the secondary assist.

The point is Fabbro's first since Dec. 13 and his first goal since Dec. 12.

(13:24 — CBJ Goal): Coyle's eighth gave him goals in back-to-back games and gave Columbus the 2-0 lead. Jake Christiansen (2) and Dmitri Voronkov (14) dished out the assists.

Boone Jenner and Andersson dropped the mitts at 9:15 of the second period. Jenner hit Andersson into the boards, the two exchanged pleasantries, and the gloves were off. It's Jenner's second fight this season, the first occurring against Matt Dumba and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 25.

(12:00 — CGY Goal): Frost broke the Greaves shutout with his ninth goal, coming on the power play. Mikael Backlund (18) and Yegor Sharangovich (7) assisted. The goal for Frost broke a 12-game goalless drought dating back to Dec. 13.

The emotions continued on both sides with additional scrums. All of the penalties occurred in the second period.

(19:18 — CGY Goal): Andersson's power-play goal (10) tied the game. Sharangovich got his second assist (8), and Connor Zary added his eighth helper.

(4:46 — CBJ Goal): Werenski's 5-on-3 power play goal (17) put Columbus back ahead for the second time. Adam Fantilli (17) and Kirill Marchenko (22) picked up points on the play.
