UPDATE 3/16/17 – 10:47a

The Blue Jackets made it official, announcing the signing of Clarkson center Sam Vigneault to a two-year entry level contract.

Vigneault signed an American Hockey League tryout contract with the Cleveland Monsters, the Blue Jackets AHL affiliate.

The Blue Jackets appear to be on the verge of adding to their prospect pool.

TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie reported on the imminent signing of Clarkson University forward Sam Vigneault, who is expected to sign a two-year entry level contract with the club.

It's a rare dip into the college free agent waters for the Blue Jackets, who inked Michigan free agent goaltender Shawn Hunwick to a short-term deal several years back. They've been relatively quiet on this front, but apparently feel that Vigneault has enough upside and is worth the risk.

Vigneault, a junior, is a big kid (6-foot-5) who's had a strong season for Clarkson, which is ironically the alma mater of Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen. Vigneault has 12 goals and 36 points in 39 games this season for the Golden Knights, and reportedly drew the attention of NHL scouts throughout the season. Once he signs this contract, he will forego his senior season.

The Watertown Daily Times recently ran a story on Vigneault, who is expected to join the Cleveland Monsters (AHL) on a tryout agreement for the balance of the season.

“His maturation, physically, as a player, has been great. He’s always had great offensive vision and an IQ for the game. I think he’s become more patient in the application of it and making plays. I like the way his game has rounded out."

The Blue Jackets have yet to confirm McKenzie's report.
