Blue Jackets Blow 4-0 Lead, Lose to Penguins 5-4 in OT

The Blue Jackets blew a 4-0 second-period lead and lost 5-4 in overtime to the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh Tuesday night.

1st Period

Emil Bemstrom opened the scoring on the power play at 4:02 with a one-timer from the left circle off a feed from Cole Sillinger who received a slap-pass from Kent Johnson.

Lane Pederson scored his first goal as a Jacket at 7:54 one the rush after he crashed the net to finish off a rebound from a Liam Foudy centering pass. 

Patrik Laine extended the Jackets' lead to three at 10:11 after Johnson intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and sent Roslovic down the left wing with a beautiful lead pass before Roslovic found Laine in his wheelhouse with a no-look backhand pass.

The Jackets led 3-0 after the first period with a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.

2nd Period

Michael Hutchinson replaced Elvis Merzlikins, who stopped all seven shots he faced, to start the second period. 

Foudy put Columbus up four at 2:37 with a wicked wrist shot from the left circle over the right shoulder of Tristan Jarry after receiving a cross-ice feed from Bemstrom.

After the goal, Jarry was pulled after stopping eight of 12 shots.

Jason Zucker got the Penguins on the board at 10:23 after being left wide open in front of the net and deking Hutchinson for the goal.

Columbus took a 4-1 lead into the third period trailing 23-19 in shots on goal.

3rd Period

Jake Guentzel cut Pittsburgh's deficit to two at 0:21 with a snap-shot from the right circle.

Zucker scored his second of the night at 3:16 after he was left all alone in the slot.

Danton Heinen tied the game at four at 3:59. on a rebound off the rush after being left open at the doorstep by Erik Gudbranson.

The Penguins scored two goals in 0:43 and three goals in 3:38.

The teams were tied at four and headed to overtime with Pittsburgh leading 41-26 in shots on goal.

Overtime

Sidney Crosby scored the winner at 2:45 on the power play with a one-timer from the right circle.

With the loss, the Jackets fall to 20-37-7.

Injury Update

Elvis Merzlikins did not play the final two periods. The team said he is ill.
