Rangers Hold on to 3-0 First Period Lead, Beat Blue Jackets 6-2

The Rangers took a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on to the lead in a 6-2 victory over the Blue Jackets at Madison Square Garden in New York Tuesday. 

1st Period

Johnny Gaudreau capped off a chance-filled start for the Blue Jackets at 3:15 when he was left wide open in front of the net but was robbed by Igor Shesterkin.

The Rangers opened the scoring at 5:23 when Filip Chytil found the net to finish a net-mouth scramble.

New York doubled its lead at 6:50 when Vladimir Tarasenko, who was wide open in the low slot, tipped home a beautiful pass from Braden Schneider.

Patrick Kane scored at 8:00 to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead with a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Michael Hutchinson up high. 

Kirill Marchenko's power-play goal at 11:45 got the Blue Jackets on the board when he fired a wrist shot from the left circle after receiving a nice feed from Jack Roslovic. With the goal, Marchenko tied Pierre-Luc Dubois' single-season record for most goals by a Blue Jackets rookie.

Gaudreau cut the Rangers' deficit in half at 19:31 with a shot from the right doorstep after Boone Jenner's backhand pass found him wide-open before beating Shesterkin top-shelf.

New York took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission along with a 17-12 advantage in shots on goal.

2nd Period

Hutchinson made a huge save at 12:31 on Chris Kreider from the left doorstep following a great cross-ice feed from Kane.

Artemi Panarin made it a 4-2 game on the power play when he fired a wrist shot from the right circle past Hutchinson at 17:36.

The Rangers led 4-2 heading into the final period of regulation with a 29-22 advantage in shots on goal. 

3rd Period

Shesterkin made another incredible glove save on Roslovic at 8:48 following a fantastic saucer pass from Kent Johnson. 

The Rangers took a 5-2 lead at 14:27 after Panarin found a wide-open Mika Zibanejad in the left circle, who fired a shot past Hutchinson.

Vincent Trocheck scored an empty-net goal at 16:21 to make it a 6-2 game. 

The Rangers won 6-2 and the Blue Jackets fell to 23-43-7 with the loss.

Injury Update

Mathieu Olivier is out two-to-four weeks with a lower-body injury and Erik Gudbranson is expected to miss six weeks with a separated shoulder. Both of those players left Friday night's game. Elvis Merzlikins is day-to-day with a lower-body injury suffered in Saturday's game and Nick Blankenburg is week-to-week with an ankle injury suffered in Friday's game.

The Blue Jackets will travel north to Boston to face the Bruins on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
