Blue Jackets Surrender Two-Goal Third-Period Lead, Lose 3-2 to Hurricanes

After taking a 2-0 lead early in the third, the Blue Jackets surrendered three straight goals and lost 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Sunday.

1st Period

Yegor Chinakhov had the Blue Jackets' best chance of the period when he went on a breakaway at 11:32, but Canes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov made the save.

Sebastian Aho had Carolina's best chance of the opening frame from the doorstep at 17:59 but Elvis Merzlikins kept the game scoreless save. 

The teams were tied at zero after the first period with Carolina leading 18-8 in shots on goal.

2nd Period

Alexandre Texier nearly scored in his return to the lineup at 6:17 after receiving a pass from Chinakhov at the left doorstep but Kochetkov made the save. 

Martin Necas had a great chance to score with a shot from the slot at 12:23, but Merzlikins made the save.

The teams were still scoreless heading into the third period with Carolina ahead 27-16 in shots on goal.

3rd Period

Kirill Marchenko opened the scoring with a tight-angle shot from the right wing at 0:13.

Johnny Gaudreau doubled the Columbus lead at 6:41 with a left-circle wrist shot that took a weird deflection on its way to the net.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi put Carolina on the board at 10:01 with a wrist shot from the low slot. 

Carolina tied the game at 16:51 when Brady Skjei swatted a bouncing puck past Merzlikins. 

Andrei Svechnikov gave the Hurricanes the lead at 18:03 with a snapshot from the left slot.

Carolina hung on to win 3-2. 

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fell to 6-12-4.

Injury Update

Alexandre Texier returned after missing two games due to an illness. Damon Severson will miss approximately six weeks with an oblique injury. Jack Roslovic has been on IR since Nov. 13 with a fractured ankle that will sideline him for four to six weeks.

The Blue Jackets will return home to face the Boston Bruins on Monday at 7 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
