Brad Marchand's Natural Hat Trick Leads Bruins Past Blue Jackets 3-1

After taking a lead into the third period, the Blue Jackets surrendered a natural hat trick to Brad Marchand and lost 3-1 to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Sunday. 

1st Period

Pavel Zacha had Boston's best chance to open the scoring at 14:50 with a power-play shot from the bottom of the right circle, but Spencer Martin made the glove save.

Kent Johnson had the Blue Jackets' best chance of the period at 18:24 when his bid from the right doorstep thanks to a feed from Boone Jenner was stopped by Jeremy Swayman. 

The teams were tied at zero after the first period with the Blue Jackets ahead 8-6 in shots on goal.

2nd Period

Charlie Coyle had a golden opportunity to open the scoring on the power play at 4:22 when he received Jake DeBrusk's centering pass at the right doorstep, but Martin made the save going left to right.

Matt Poitras tested Martin at 14:45 when he fired the rebound from Charlie McAvoy's shot from the left doorstep.

Jenner gave the Blue Jackets the lead at 19:24 when he evaded McAvoy and finished Mathieu Olivier's feed from the right doorstep.

The Blue Jackets led 1-0 after the second period while trailing 22-17 in shots on goal.

3rd Period

Marchand tied the game at 1:56 with a right-circle knuckle puck that fooled Martin.

He then gave Boston the lead at 5:37 with a power-play goal, firing a wrist shot from the high slot past Martin.

At 7:46, Marchand completed the natural hat trick with his second power-play goal of the night, firing a left-circle wrist shot past Martin.

The Blue Jackets fell 3-1 and are now 8-14-4.

Injury Update

Damon Severson was placed on IR retroactive to Nov. 19 and will miss approximately six weeks with an oblique injury. Jack Roslovic has been on IR since Nov. 13 with a fractured ankle that will sideline him for four to six weeks. Cole Sillinger is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. 

Next Up

The Blue Jackets will return home and welcome Pierre-Luc Dubois, Vladislav Gavrikov, and the Los Angeles Kings to town on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.

The club will travel to New York to take on the Islanders at UBS Arena on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
