Patrick Kane Scores Overtime Winner As Blue Jackets Concede Another Late Third-Period Lead In 4-3 Loss To Red Wings

Despite a goal and three points from Zach Werenski, the Blue Jackets blew another third-period lead and lost 4-3 in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday.

1st Period

Werenski opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season at 5:56 with a breakaway goal.

Alexandre Texier doubled Columbus' lead with a breakaway of his own as he exited the penalty box at 13:43 for his 11th goal of the season.

The Blue Jackets led 2-0 after 20 minutes and took a 20-5 advantage in shots on goal into the second period. 

2nd Period

Lucas Raymond put Detroit on the board on the power play at 2:57 to finish a great tic-tac-toe play from the bumper. 

Moritz Seider tied the game at 4:23 with a right-point shot that was stopped by Daniil Tarasov but the rebound deflected off Erik Gudbranson and in.

The teams were tied at two after 40 minutes with the Blue Jackets leading 27-15 in shots on goal.  

3rd Period

Kirill Marchenko gave the Blue Jackets the lead on the power play at 4:26 with a right shot from the top of the right circle for his 18th goal of the season. 

Tarasov made a great save on Patrick Kane's deflection attempt from the right doorstep at 13:07 to preserve the lead.

Raymond tied the game at 19:47 from the low slot off the rebound from Kane's shot.

The teams were tied at three after 60 minutes with the Blue Jackets ahead 35-25 in shots on goal.

Overtime

Kane scored the overtime winner at 0:48 with a sharp-angle shot from the left goal line.

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fell to 23-34-12.

Injury Update

  • Adam Boqvist is out with an upper-body injury sustained on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators. There is no timetable for his return. 
  • Sean Kuraly is week-to-week with a lower-body injury sustained on Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Yegor Chinakhov is day-to-day with an upper-body injury he suffered during Tuesday's against the Canadiens. 
  • Justin Danforth suffered a concussion on Mar. 7. There is no timetable for his return.
  • Kent Johnson has been placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his left shoulder that will sideline him for the remainder of the season. He underwent successful surgery on March 7 and is expected to make a full recovery in six months.
  • Patrik Laine entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on Jan. 28 and will be away from the team indefinitely.
  • Adam Fantilli suffered a calf laceration on Jan. 28 and is expected to miss eight weeks.
