The Blue Jackets surrendered a goal 17 seconds into the game and lost 3-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Sunday.

1st Period

Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring at 17 seconds with a right-circle wrist shot. 

Justin Danforth nearly tied the game at 10:36 on a breakaway but his shot hit the post.

Sebastian Aho doubled Carolina's lead at 11:45 with a right-circle one-timer on the power play thanks to a sweet feed from Jake Guentzel. 

The Hurricanes led 2-0 after 20 minutes and took a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal into the second period. 

2nd Period

Neither team scored in the second period, but the Blue Jackets went 3/3 on the penalty kill in the middle frame. Carolina took a 2-0 lead and a 24-14 advantage in shots on goal into the third period.

3rd Period

Malcolm Subban made a big stop on Stefan Noesen from the left circle at 7:12 to keep the Blue Jackets' deficit at two. 

Teuvo Teravainen put Carolina up 3-0 at 13:53 with a left-circle wrist shot through traffic. 

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fell to 26-40-12.

Injury Update

  • Boone Jenner is out.
  • Adam Boqvist is out with an upper-body injury sustained on Mar. 14 against the Ottawa Senators. There is no timetable for his return. 
  • Yegor Chinakhov is day-to-day with an upper-body injury he suffered on Mar. 12 against the Canadiens. 
  • Elvis Merzlikins is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. 
  • Kent Johnson has been placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his left shoulder that will sideline him for the remainder of the season. He underwent successful surgery on Mar. 7 and is expected to make a full recovery in six months.
  • Patrik Laine entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on Jan. 28 and will be away from the team indefinitely.
  • Adam Fantilli suffered a calf laceration on Jan. 28 and is expected to miss eight weeks.
  • Jake Bean is out for the season with a broken hand suffered on Apr. 4. 
  • Daniil Tarasov is out with an upper-body injury suffered on Apr. 4.

The Blue Jackets continue their road trip on Tuesday when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena at 7 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.

They'll stay in Florida when they face the Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
