CBJ GOALS: |
||||
Morgan Frost and Blake Coleman each scored in the opening two minutes and that was enough for the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, as they defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1.
Kirill Marchenko gave the Blue Jackets some life at the 6:57 mark of the period, when his first career short-handed goal put Columbus within one.
But the Flames would score two goals in quick succession again in the second period. First, Nazem Kadri made it 3-1 with 12:13 left in the middle frame, and then Adam Klapka extended Calgary's lead to 4-1 just 37 seconds later. Both goals came on 2-on-1 rushes for the Flames.
Despite 22 shots on goal in the third period, the Blue Jackets could not solve Flames goalie Dustin Wolf.
Wolf, who finished with 42 saves on 43 shots, was named the Second Star of the Game.
Calgary's Mikael Backlund added an empty-netter in the final minute of the game to make it 5-1.
"We didn't seem like we had a bunch of jump early," said head coach Dean Evason. "We didn't do the right things in tonight's hockey game to give ourselves a chance to win."
Jet Greaves finished with 21 saves on 25 shots.
Sean Monahan left the game in the second period with an injury. Evason did not have an update after the game beyond saying that Monahan was still being evaluated.
Here's how the Blue Jackets moved to 0-2-0 through two games of their five-game road trip:
