Columbus struck twice with power-play goals by Mason Marchment and Charlie Coyle in the first period as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena.

Coyle had four points in total with a goal and three assists. Danton Heinen, Denton Mateychuk, and Mathieu Olivier scored. Adam Fantilli and Cole Sillinger each had two assists. Jet Greaves made 27 saves.

Andrei Svechnikov scored for Carolina, and Brandon Bussi made 24 saves.

The first power play, a double minor, came by way of an errant high stick by Seth Jarvis that caught Zach Werenski. The shots on goal were 5-0 in favor of the Hurricanes, when Marchment's first shot for the Jackets went behind Bussi for the 1-0 Jackets' lead.

Coyle added to Columbus' lead at 19:05.

The Hurricanes finally solved Greaves as Svechnikov made it 2-1 at 14:05 of the second period.

The Jackets poured it on with goals from Heinen and Mateychuk, adding two more third-period goals to make it 4-1. Olivier added more insurance in the third to make it 5-1. Jarvis also got a double minor in the third period after he caught Conor Garland in the face with his stick.

"We came out great," head coach Rick Bowness said. "(The Hurricanes) are a fast team. But then we got our game going, and you saw how effective we are with our forecheck.

"You bend, you don't break. That's what we did tonight."

Here's how the Blue Jackets got their point streak to double digits as they picked up their second straight win:

1st Period:

(5:25 — CBJ Goal): Marchment (16) scored his 12th as a Jacket, doing it while falling as he received the pass from Charlie Coyle (36) and got the shot off. Adam Fantilli picked up his 29th assist to extend a four-game point streak (one goal, four assists).

There was a trading of fists as pals Mathieu Olivier and Nicholas Deslauriers dropped the gloves at 9:38.

(7:38 — CBJ Goal): Olivier got to within two-thirds of the Gordie Howe hat trick following the second-period fight and his third-period goal to make it 5-1. Coyle (38) had himself a night with his fourth point, his third assist. His 38 assists match his career high set in 2016-17 with the Minnesota Wild. Sillinger added his second assist (22).
