I saw that Kiril was very happy here. He has 2 more years left on a bridge deal at just under 4 million a year. He could cost 10 million + per year in 2 years when the contract is up (if he keeps improving).
I dont know if this is possible, but can front offices sign players early to longer deals? Since we have cap room now, what if you offered Kiril 7.5 million for 8-10 years starting now? Rip up the current contract and give him more. The players union or NHL likely would not have a problem with it.
Benefits:
-We have the cap room now. Use it.
-We save more later when we may need cap room. If Kiril really explodes, he might even be worth 12M, who knows. It could be a huge savings.
-Kiril gets an extra 4 million this year and next. More upfront is often enticing to players.
Risk: If Kiril doesnt improve more or is not as good in the future, we are hamstrung with a bigger contract. But all signs point to him rising further. Even if he maintained the 60-70 pts only, that is worth 7.5M a year. So I so this as a small risk.
Is this possible? thoughts?
