Sanduskywalt's uninformed demand that Kent Johnson be sent to Cleveland got me thinking. Okay, KJ has been in an offensive slump. If that is the only measure you use to judge who should be sent to Cleveland, then Sean Monahan and Kirill Marchenko should be sent down, too. And the entire fourth line - Yes, including captain Boone Jenner - should be looking over their shoulders.
But sensible people know better. But, just for the sake of argument, let's say that KJ does need to spend some time in Cleveland, who takes his place on the ice. Well, Miles Wood and Dimitri Voronkov have been sitting in the press box. But if either of them would be an upgrade on KJ, wouldn't Bowness have already benched KJ and put them in?
And who would be brought up to take KJ's roster spot. Probably Brendan Gaunce. But Gaunce is a classic hockey tweener. So thinking that he could provide better second line minutes is folly. Gaunce can be a useful fourth liner for a limited time, but that would require either Jenner, Lundestrom or Heinen to move up, probably to the second line since only a fool would break up the Sillinger - Coyle - Olivier line.
But all of this is just spitballing because, while KJ is in an offensive slump, he has been excellent playing away from the puck and doing all the little things that help a team win.
So, Sanduskywalt, now, you have all the reasons why Kent Johnson will not be sent to Cleveland.
