While I'm mulling an updated trade list, other things are in my thoughts. So, why not share them to give you something to read and (maybe) tell me that I'm crazy. First up, should Jenner be signed to an extension?
And the trouble with that question is that Boone's biggest contribution to the team has always been intangibles. Yes, he provided solid secondary scoring for most of his career. And he is, arguably, the best defensive forward the Jackets ever drafted and developed. And that defense is still quite good. But....But what Boone has always excelled at has been those things that don't show up on the score sheet.
His play away from the puck is and has been some of the best in the league. There's no way to calculate how many goals weren't scored against the Jackets because of his play away from the puck. He's a top flight passer because he's superior at seeing the ice and reading the play. He's the kind of player that major junior coaches point at and say, "That's how you play the game." And even when Foligno was captain (Even before, in some ways), he was a leader on the ice and in the locker room.
On the other hand, Boone's physical playing style has begun catching up to him as evidenced by spending significant time injured in recent seasons. Those injuries have, no doubt, contributed to Jenner's reduced offensive abilities and it's obvious that he's lost a step.
Then there's Bowness' pledge to change the culture because too many people are comfortable with losing. Is Jenner one of those people? Or could it be that Bowness thinks that Jenner wasn't vocal enough with those who are too comfortable with losing? We can't know.
However, when I look at the bad and good, I think it's time for a changing of the guard. Boone would be a very good addition for a team that can be counted on to go deep in the playoffs. So, let him chase a Cup. After giving his all to a never quite there Jackets team, he's earned it.
In a few days, my favorite candidate to wear the C and why.
