NYR 2, CBJ 1: Rangers Take Down Columbus In A Shootout

A good game that ends up on the wrong side.

Voronkov (P2, 15:20)

Mika Zibanejad scored in regulation, and J.T. Miller scored the deciding shootout goal as the New York Rangers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 on Saturday night at Nationwide Arena.

Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves.

Dmitri Voronkov scored for Columbus. Jet Greaves made 31 saves. Dean Evason coached his 100th career game against the Rangers (49-41-10, .540 P%).

"That's a good hockey team," Werenski said. "They're structured very well. Obviously been a good road team all year. They didn't give us much, but I liked the way we competed and got a point out of it, so definitely on the tougher side of creating stuff, but I liked our compete as well."

With the Blue Jackets needing a jolt in the second period, how did they get back into it?

"No. 24," Evason said. "That got us going, right? Not necessarily the fight but the hit. He literally told the next pair that was going out to get (the puck) in his corner, and he was going to be physical and try to get things stirred up a bit, and he did.

"It gave us a real bump."

Despite the loss snapping a two-game winning streak, Columbus is on a four-game point streak.

Here's how this one went between the Blue Jackets and Rangers.


1st Period:

(5:42 — Penalty Shot): Miles Wood had a penalty shot attempt on Shesterkin after being sent down and going hard into the net.

2nd Period:

(5:42 — NYR Goal): Zibanejad broke the scoreless tie as he scored his sixth of the year on the power play to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead. Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox assisted on the play.

(15:20 — CBJ Goal): The Blue Jackets found the equalizer when Voronkov scored his seventh on the power play to tie the game 1-1. Zach Werenski and Kirill Marchenko assisted. Marchenko extended his career-best point streak to 11 games (three goals, 10 assists).

Olivier didn't figure into the scoresheet from a points perspective, but he found a way to be an instrumental figure.

(15:57 — Fight): Mathieu Olivier fought Sam Carrick in a spirited battle, with the edge going to Olivier.

Shootout:

For the second game in the last three, this one was decided in extra time plus a shootout session. Vincent Trocheck and Marchenko were the scorers in the shootout before Miller came away with the deciding shootout tally to give the Rangers the 2-1 win. New York is an NHL-best 9-1-1 on the road. Columbus extended its point streak to four games.
