CBJ GOALS:
Wood (1st, 18:27)
Werenski (3rd, 4:04)

The Winnipeg Jets scored three unanswered goals in the second and third period Tuesday night, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 and putting an end to Columbus' five-game point streak.

The Jets jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes in on an Adam Lowry goal. The Blue Jackets would respond with just 1:33 left in the opening frame on the fifth goal of the season from Miles Wood.

Winnipeg would extend the lead to 3-1 by the end of the second period on goals from Neal Pionk and Josh Morrissey, then make it 4-1 early in the third frame on a Kyle Connor goal.

Zach Werenski would briefly cut into Winnipeg's lead and make it a 4-2 game with a goal in his second straight game. It was the 400th point of his NHL career, and only seven American-born defensemen have achieved that mark in fewer games than Z's 587.

Just 2:19 later, the Jets would regain the three-goal lead and make it a 5-2 game on a Logan Stanley goal, putting the game out of reach.

Making his first start in six games, Elvis Merzlikins finished with 25 saves on 30 shots. It was his third consecutive loss as the starting goaltender.

This was Columbus' sixth game in nine nights, including their second back-to-back in that stretch.

"It took us a bit to find our legs, and then we had it for a little bit, and then we lost it a little bit again," said head coach Dean Evason.

Here's how the Blue Jackets fell to 10-8-2 on the season:

1st Period:

(7:35 — WPG Goal): Winnipeg strikes first. Lowry gets his first goal of the season on a nice look from Nino Niederreiter to make it 1-0 Jets.

(18:27 — CBJ Goal): Wood ties the game at 1-1. He gets a great outlet pass from Damon Severson in the corner and uses his speed to create a breakaway, beating Comrie to bring the game back to even.

2nd Period:

(1:12 — WPG Goal): The Jets regain the lead just over a minute into the middle frame. Mark Scheifele leads the rush and centers Morrissey, who buries a one-timer to make it 2-1 Winnipeg.

(15:30 — WPG Goal): A power play goal makes it 3-1 Jets. Pionk whips a heavy slapper through traffic to extend the Winnipeg lead.

3rd Period:

(2:45 — WPG Goal): Connor makes it 4-1 Jets after he carries the puck along the goal line and beats Merzlikins with a short-side shot that deflects off Elvis' facemask and into the net.

(4:04 — CBJ Goal): Werenski scores his sixth of the season to cut into Winnipeg's lead and make it a 4-2 game. He's up in the play, takes a good look from Sillinger, and fires a shot from the slot that trickles past Comrie for Z's sixth goal of the season.

(6:23 — WPG Goal): Stanley collects a pass on the rush and goes top-shelf with a heavy slapper to put Winnipeg in front 5-2.

  • Kirill Marchenko's point streak ends at 12 games; he was one shy from tying Ryan Johansen's record of 13, which came during the 2014-15 season.

  • The three-goal loss also ended a six-game streak of one-goal games for the Blue Jackets. They went 3-1-2 during that stretch.
