CBJ GOALS:
Mateychuk (3rd,5:50)

The Washington Capitals scored two goals in the final seconds of the second period en route to a 5-1 victory Monday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Making matters worse, both Mathieu Olivier and Zach Werenski were unable to finish the game with undisclosed injuries. Olivier left late in the first period and did not return, while Werenski did not come out for the third period.

Head coach Dean Evason did not have an update on Werenski or Olivier and stated that both players will be evaluated Tuesday.

The Capitals were up 1-0 after the first and doubled their lead with 3:31 left in the second period on a Tom Wilson goal.

That's when the wheels came off. Washington scored on the power play with just 15 seconds left in the frame to go up 3-0, then made it 4-0 with just three seconds left on a John Carlson goal.

The Capitals made it 5-0 less than five minutes into the third period when Martin Fehérváry beat Elvis Merzlikins from a distance.

Merzlikins finished the night with 26 saves on 31 shots.

Denton Mateychuk scored the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, ending Washington's Logan Thompson's bid for a shutout.

Veteran forward Charlie Coyle said that the effort just wasn't there in this one for the Blue Jackets.

"I don't think we gave ourselves a good enough chance," said Coyle. "You can't expect to win when you don't bring your game."

Here's how the Blue Jackets fell in the Nation's Capital:

1st Period:

(13:55 — WSH Goal): Jakob Chychrun puts Washington on the board first and make it eight straight games with a point for the defenseman. Ryan Leonard whiffs on a shot in the slot, but Chychrun picks it up, pivots out of traffic, and fires past Merzlikins to make it 1-0 Capitals just over six minutes in.

2nd Period:

(16:29 — WSH Goal): The Capitals double their lead on Wilson's goal late in the second period. Some great passing from Washington, starting with a backhand pass from Justin Sourdif near the net. Aliaksei Protas is the recipient of that, and he quickly taps it over to Wilson, who gets the goal to put Washington up 2-0.

(19:45 — WSH Goal): Washington makes it a 3-0 game with the first of two goals in the closing seconds of the period. This one is Chychrun's second of the night and comes on the power play. He shoots it from the point, not a ton of traffic between him and Merzlikins but it sneaks into the goal to put the Capitals up three.

(19:57 — WSH Goal): With just three seconds left in the period, Washington makes it 4-0. Adam Fantilli is chased from the faceoff, Dmitri Voronkov steps in and loses the draw, and Carlson quickly fires a shot that gets past Merzlikins to bring the Caps' crowd to their feet again before the end of the frame.

3rd Period:

(4:05 — WSH Goal): Fehérváry puts the Caps up 5-0. He shoots from a distance and there's just enough traffic between him and Merzlikins to screen Elvis, who has the puck deflect off his blocker and into the back of the net.

(5:50 — CBJ Goal): Mateychuk finally puts the Blue Jackets on the board to make it a 5-1 game. Thompson makes the first two saves but the second rebound trickles right to Mateychuk in the slot, and he punches it through traffic and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
