The Butcher shop is now open for business.

The New Jersey Devils have signed college free agent Will Butcher to a two-year entry-level contract. Butcher was captain of the University of Denver team that won the 2017 NCAA National Championship. Butcher also won the Hobey Baker Award which is given to the nations most outstanding player.

Butcher made waves when he passed on signing with the Colorado Avalanche and decided to view his options via free agency. The Columbus Blue Jackets reportedly showed interest in the young defenseman but were never considered finalists.

The Devils add Butcher to a blue line devoid of a star. While Butcher may not start immediately in the NHL, the pathway to playing time is visible.
